Or check it to let windows turn off usb ports to save power. Click change advanced power settings. Under the power tab you can see the power output for that usb port. The operating system microsoft windows 7 allows the computer to shut off power to usb devices to save power.

Right click on the usb root hub you want to change and then click on properties to open the usb port s properties dialog box. Click on ok to save your changes. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all of the usb root hubs on the computer. Click the power management tab.

Under the power management tab you will see the option for restricting power to the usb port to save battery power. Choose your desired settings using the checkboxes and then click on ok to save these settings. In the power options dialog box expand usb settings and then expand usb selective suspend setting. Under preferred plan click the change plan settings link for the plan you re currently using.

Click the start button and type edit power plan in the windows search box. If you change the settings on the power plan that isn t active this won t. If you want usb ports to keep supplying power in sleep mode just uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Repeat this process for each usb port hub you want to change.

Depending on your computer you may see several preset plan settings balanced power saving performance etc. Click on the power management tab and then choose the power settings you want using the check boxes next to each option. Set both the on battery and plugged in settings to disabled then click ok to apply changes. Under the selected power plan click change plan settings.

If you are using a laptop computer this feature may help if you do not want usb powered devices to draw off the computer s battery while the devices are not actively being used.
